6 Columbus Claims New York

It's been a long time coming — but better late than never.

6 Columbus is finally set to become the new address for uptown chic. Following the footsteps of its trendy SoHo sister, 60 Thompson, the 88-room Columbus Circle hotel opens this week as the second New York property in the Thompson Hotel stable of “urban retreats” (two more are already slated for 2008). And, if nothing else, it’s certainly mastered the fashionably late entrance: 6 Columbus was supposed to open two years ago in the remodeled digs of the old West Park Hotel, but “aesthetic considerations” reportedly delayed the plan.

Still, 6 Columbus now flashes a mod-1960’s elegance designed by Thompson Hotel favorite Steven Sclaroff — that means teak and chrome accents coupled with sleek and sexy furniture. Bedroom amenities, meanwhile, are rooted strictly in the current century with preloaded i-Pods and plasma TVs. But even if you’re not shacking up here, the hotel warrants a visit for the Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill (the sixth incarnation of the Blue Ribbon dynasty), and a multilevel rooftop bar — which promises the same members-only swank of SoHo’s A60.
