A Grande Vision for Venice

Aman Resorts to open its first Italian property — set inside a landmark palazzo right on the Grand Canal.

As art hounds flock to Venice this summer for the 55th art biennale, you’re likely to spot a different kind of aficionado visiting as well.

This one will arrive to her Grand Canal hotel by the property’s private boat. She will alight to enter the 16th-century palazzo that greets her with stunning, landmarked frescoes and the chic, minimalist furnishings she’s come to expect from this hotel brand. The property will be intimate — only 24 suites — and each staff member will know her by name.

To travel insiders, she’s an Amanjunkie.

And the property? This is Aman Resorts‘ newest, the Aman Canal Grande, slated to open June 1. Situated between the Rialto and Accademia bridges, in San Polo, one of the oldest parts of the city, the hotel features one of the few private gardens set right on the Grand Canal. Here, guests will dine al fresco when not taking in rooftop views on the roof terrace whose panorama encompasses not only the Rialto Bridge but the octaganol Church of Santa Maria Salute and the Campanile in St. Mark’s Square.

Each of the Aman’s suites have views of the canal or the private gardens, but there are three special “signature suites” that really remind you where you are — including ornately painted sitting rooms, arched windows and stunning fireplaces, even a bedroom ceiling crafted by the 18th-century artist Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.

If you can tear yourself away from the serenity of Aman’s first Italian hotel, then the Peggy Guggenheim Collection is just a few hundred yards up the Grand Canal. And of course, they’ll be the Venice Biennale to visit through November 24.
