A Taste of Vail

For a few days at least, plates eclipse piste in this ski town.

Why make reservations at Frasca weeks in advance when you can guarantee a table this week at Taste of Vail? Frasca’s Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson is one of four star chefs whose banquet will anchor this year’s festival, starting tomorrow. Now in its 17th year, Vail’s culinary convocation is billed as the nation’s premier food and wine event and is hosted at the newly renovated Vail Marriot Mountain Resort & Spa. A $395 pass also gets you into demos with Food Network’s Napa Valley guru Michael Chiarello and Spago Beverly Hills chef Lee Hefter; a gourmet picnic 10,350 feet up on Vail Mountain; and of course all the international wine you can drink. If wine’s not your poison of choice, there’s an outdoor cigar and rum tasting as well as a cocktail mix-off featuring, no, not bartenders but bar chefs. The four-day festival culminates Saturday with a lavish dinner-dance and auction of rare wines and travel-culinary packages. And just in case you’re feeling guilty about all the gluttony, take note: Taste of Vail is a nonprofit affair. Proceeds from past festivals have gone to Hurricane Katrina and other charities.
