Barcelona’s monument to Modernism finally gets its crown
Over 100 years after construction began on La Sagrada Familia, Barcelona’s famous cathedral — and arguably the most iconic building in Spain — is finally getting a roof. Designed by Antoni Gaudí, a devout Catholic, he sunk the last 40 years of his life, and his money, into the Art Nouveau masterpiece before being laid to rest in the unfinished church. Since then, construction has continued in starts and stops, and current estimates say the structure’s 18 towers will be complete by 2025. But the roof is slated for completion by 2010, when La Sagrada Familia will finally fulfill its purpose: hosting religious services and cultural events for the first time — rain or shine, of course.
