Betsey Johnson punks up, er, perks up The Plaza with Eloise

New York’s Plaza Hotel has a new suite: it’s pink and black, and fabulously irreverent. That means it was either inspired by naughty, fictional resident Eloise, or it’s been styled by fashion designer Betsey Johnson. In this case, it’s both.

Perched on the 18th floor, the Eloise Suite is a little bit sweet, a little bit sassy, decorated with candy-stripe wallpaper, zebra-print carpeting, and chandeliers glowing with pink light bulbs. The bedding depicts scenes from Eloise, the book illustrated by Hilary Knight. But then there’s a punky twist: the leading lady’s name in neon lights above the headboard.

Each new Eloise can put her stamp on the room, courtesy of a disposable camera and a “memory board.” The memory board is intended to be filled with pictures from each guest’s stay — and you’ll find the first by the designer herself. (Betsey Johnson’s affection for the Plaza is no secret: she held her raucous spring fashion show last year in the Plaza’s Palm Court.)

Fortunately, adjoining the Eloise Suite is a more traditional “Edwardian” suite — that means there’s one suite for your little Eloise, and another for mommy and daddy. You’ll know which is which.
