Boston Regal
New York, watch your back — Beantown's got an eye on the East Coast throne.
Ladies and gents, the apocalypse is upon us: Boston’s Big Dig — aka America’s costliest highway project — is finally finished (17 years later). And the Big Repair is beginning. Plus, with a downtown Mandarin Oriental and a Battery Wharf Regent opening this summer — not to mention a W Hotel next year — Beantown might be trying to steal Manhattan’s crown as the East Coast’s it-city. Leading the charge is a 21-story Renaissance Waterfront Hotel debuting Friday with a sail-like glass structure that nods to its Seaport District locale.
Sure, Renaissance isn’t known for being as cosmopolitan-cool as the W and its Gerber bars and Bliss spas. But parent company Marriott has now poured $2 billion into spicing up the brand with a worldwide makeover. Starting now, say goodbye to stodgy floral duvets and hello to “Renaissance Revive” bedding (think: white down comforters and “richly colored bed scarves”). While down at the hotel lounge, a new “Cocktail Culture” program lets guests create their own signature drinks. But for top VIP treatment, there’s the new Platinum Pass, which enables you to breeze past the check-in desk with true New York attitude.
