British Virgin Islands welcome first new-build resort in 20 years
For the first time in 20 years, a new resort has been built in the British Virgin Islands, and it opens its doors this week. Scrub Island Resort is a private island resort featuring 52 ocean-view rooms with verandas, and even more exclusive ocean-view villas with private pools and tropical terraces.
Scrub Island counts a lagoon-style, multi-level pool with a 15-foot waterfall among its amenities. In addition, you’ll find a 6,000-square-foot spa villa with its own infinity pool, and a 53-slip marina. The island’s main bar is named Tierra Tierra (that’s “Land Land”), which is supposedly what one of Columbus’s sailors shouted when he spotted Scrub Island for the first time.
Other dining options offer their own quirks as well. A private dining room off Caravela, the main restaurant, is lit with hundreds of candles (it is rather unimaginatively called The Candle Room), while the laid-back One Shoe Beach Bar & Grill strictly states jackets and ties are not allowed. Score a free cocktail at one of their Full Moon parties if you let the bar have one of your shoes. Of course, if they start serving mushroom tea — a legal brew in BVI, and a popular Full Moon libation — you’ll probably end up losing more than just a shoe. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
