In preparation for its 20th production, Cirque du Soleil is setting up stage behind closed curtains. Returning to its hometown base of Montreal, the exuberant troupe’s latest performance is being kept under such tight wraps that the official name for the show, opening May 4, won’t be unveiled until tomorrow. But that’s just a smattering of the entertainment empire’s current offerings. This year, they are presenting 14 different shows around the world to 8 million people — in addition to their first foray into nightlife (the Revolution Lounge at the Mirage, Las Vegas). What’s next? Cirque du Soleil has just announced it’s partnering up with illusionist Criss Angel for a new show at the Luxor, Las Vegas. Slated for summer 2008, Angel will perform both music and magic “in a world he doesn’t control, [where] he has problems with girls, with giants, with evil.” If his publicity shots are anything to go by, we think they might have cast the right man for the job.
