Compete in your own Olympic biathlon
For those of us who aren’t in Vancouver skiing, curling or luging for the gold, there’s still a way to bask in Olympic glory. The Blue Boar Inn, which hosted athletes and officials for the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, is now offering guests a chance to compete in their own Biathlon Challenge. You’ll take on cross-country skiing or snowshoeing, and shooting — while donning the same jerseys and firing the same rifles used in the ‘02 Olympics. Come summer, skiing will be replaced with mountain biking.
You won’t get a medal for your efforts, which may be modest or exhausting, depending on which difficulty level you choose. However, you will earn a certificate of completion (go ahead and frame it — we won’t judge). You’ll also get to bed down in one of the Blue Boar Inn’s 12 rooms, all named after famous authors (there’s a Jane Austen deluxe room, a Charles Dickens traditional room and a Lewis Carroll grand suite). If the biathlon leaves you famished, tuck in to dishes like fondue and braised buffalo osso bucco at the inn’s restaurant. Then celebrate with a libation in the pub, Truffle Hollow, outfitted with imported European antiques, including a 16th-century hand-carved bar from France.
