Towering Distrito

Mexico City’s hotel scene is about to induct three modern classics.

North America’s largest metropolis is also making its case to be the most accommodating. In the coming months, Mexico City will see a handful of hot new hotel openings, the most visible of which stands 31 stories above the stately avenue Paseo de la Reforma. Designed by Argentine architect César Pelli (known for his iconic skyscrapers from Minneapolis to Kuala Lumpur) the St. Regis Mexico City is set to open May 1 with 189 rooms appointed in traditional Mexican fashion. The tower also has over 100 private residences and, to add a dose of star power, Jean-Georges Vongerichten will expand his empire with an in-house steakhouse.

Already responsible for the capital’s hippest boutique hotel (Condesa DF), Grupo Habita is trying to outdo itself with Distrito Capital (exterior pictured). Slated for a February 21 opening, the hotel sits atop an ultra-modern 28-story tower in the Santa Fe business district with interiors by Joseph Dirand, the designer behind Habita’s just-opened monochromatic Monterrey hotel. Never shying away from renovation — the company’s converted ice factory hotel in Puebla comes to mind — Distrito Capital has turned eight stories into four double-tall floors featuring 30 suites. And since Santa Fe can claim the city’s highest point, guests will have a dramatic 360-degree view of the Distrito Federal.

For those who like a touch of solitude with their urban retreat, new independent hotel Las Alcobas (interiors pictured) will bring 35 rooms to the posh Polanco district in late February. The hotel (which for Anglophones translates to “the alcoves”) aims for a sense of style and seclusion. Rooms are outfitted with rugs hand-knotted in the local fashion and original work from contemporary Mexican artists. The interiors themselves, however, come courtesy of Yabu Pushelberg, the Canadian design duo who also fashioned the aforementioned St. Regis. So much for local talent.
