Geneva Greets the Nouveau Richemond

Rocco Forte reinvents Charlie Chaplin’s old Alpine retreat.

Following a two-year renovation, Geneva’s Le Richemond Hotel reveals a Rocco Forte-fied makeover September 21 that’s already got people buzzing. Reputed for its neoclassic elegance (think balconies with wrought-iron balustrades, lavish French furniture and rich drapery), the 19th century property has been an enduring favorite with the stars from Charlie Chaplin to Tom Cruise. Yet nostalgia hasn’t burdened Forte’s design maven — and sister — Olga Polizzi, who’s seen fit to inject her own modern, minimalist style.

The jewel of a newly added seventh story is the 2,400-square-foot Royal Armleder Suite, accented with Art Deco touches; floor-to-ceiling windows with sweeping views of the Swiss Alps; and a name that gives homage to the family that ran the hotel since 1875. Polizzi’s flourishes also include bamboo walls and black mosaic floors in the hotel spa, featuring a Turkish steam room and Vichy shower, and is the first Shiseido facility in Switzerland. And while the Fortes have always been sticklers for service, they’ve gone above and beyond to give Le Richemond’s top clients peace of mind — the windows in the top-floor Armleder Suite are made of bullet-proof glass.
