La Dolce Isola

Italy’s new it-island is about to erupt.

Once a year, Ischia steals the spotlight from Capri as the most glamorous isle in the Bay of Naples. This year, Oliver Stone, Hilary Swank and Ben Kingsley are just a few A-listers lending star power to the fifth annual Ischia Global Film & Music Festival — a weeklong string of screenings, concerts and award bashes starting tomorrow. Oscar-winning auteur Paul Haggis (Crash, Million Dollar Baby) chairs this year’s festival, while Stone, Kingsley and, somehow, Swank, will receive “legend awards.” Events are scattered across the green island — locations include the 15th-century Castello Aragonese, a fortress crowning a vertical islet rooted off Ischia’s northeastern flank. Home base is the luxe Hotel Regina Isabella in the seaside town Lacco Ameno, known for its thermal springs. The springs owe their heat to a layer of magma that once fueled Monte Epomeo, the volcano that draws central Ischia to a peak. And though the magma layer is said to be active, you needn’t worry — Epomeo last erupted in 1301.
