What could you and the Ptolemies of Ancient Egypt (Cleopatra et el.) possibly have in common when it comes to travel? How about paddling to the Lamu Archipelago — the jeweled group of islands in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Kenya? Breaking from the traditional African safari, Gamewatchers Safaris claims to offer Kenya’s first sea kayaking safari. OK — you won’t see wildebeest, lions or elephants (unless they’re taking a dip) but you’ll be one of a select number of western visitors to experience the remote Kiunga Marine Reserve, a protected chain of over 50 islands and coral reefs. The Nairobi-based outfitter, known for running small and exclusive safari camps, indulges guests with luxury tents but also makes a point of cultivating strong links with communities. Which means eating only locally sourced produce from markets and fishermen, as well as snorkeling, wildlife viewing and visiting historical landmarks all with local guides. And, if you do happen to tack on a few extra days in Shela, the southern part of Lamu Island, remember: it’s been dubbed Gstaad by the beach for a reason.
