Luton Who?

An 18th-century manor reopens with $1,700 rooms in the English countryside. Just don’t call it an “airport hotel.”

Luton, home to one of London’s “alternative airports,” is suffering from an identity crisis. If it were in America, the town might be called an armpit. Yet, this fall, the area will be home to Luton Hoo, a genteel five-star retreat with rooms valued from $555 to $1,700 per night. The 144-room 18th century manor has been refurbished to the tune of $120 million by Elite Hotels, which now means its old-world aristocratic décor is decked with flatscreen TVs. Besides the 300-year-old chestnut trees, the property’s 1,000 acres of parkland include a new golf course, tennis court and spa. All amenities that should be appreciated by passengers of Luton-based all-business class carrier Silverjet, which is enjoying an expansion of its own. Its trans-Atlantic success, however, is probably in spite, not because of, Silverjet’s current digs — which are also home to the likes of RyanAir, easyJet and Wizz Air. While Silverjet commands its own private terminal with curbside entrance, private security line and a leather-couched “Dunhill Den,” the airline has recently been making overtures to squeeze its way into Heathrow and grab a share of Britain’s most lucrative aviation route. But what next for Luton? Sadly, no cigar for its much-touted aspirations to grow: plans for a new runway and tripled capacity have recently been scrapped.
