Melbourne redefines the art hotel

Melbourne’s hotel boom continues with the opening of the second property in a clutch of art-themed hotels planned by Art Series Hotel Group. Named after Australia’s most celebrated contemporary artist, The Olsen hotel showcases eight original works by John Olsen and peppers 229 rooms with his digital reprints. However, the masterpieces in this hotel are not Olsen’s alone — there is a glass-bottom pool, too (said to be the world’s largest), that hangs over Chapel Street, the exclusive shopping artery in South Yarra.

The Olsen follows the December opening of its Melbourne sister, The Cullen, named after another top Aussie artist, Adam Cullen. In May, the city expects the debut of the $300-million Crown Metropol, which brings Gordon Ramsay along with it.
