More Sex Please, We’re British

Just when you thought English debauchery was dead.

Those venerated establishments of erotica that once lined the narrow, gin-soaked streets of Soho, London, have mostly given way to Starbucks and Gap stores. Yet, just when you thought debauchery was dead in the West End, comes the Sanctum Soho Hotel. Opening March 21, the swanky boutique sanctuary for wayfaring rock stars and music glitterati is promising to bring back some of Soho’s old boho moxie.

The Design Hotels property rambles through two Victorian townhouses once owned by the late porn king and self-styled “King of Soho,” Paul Raymond. Following a near $15-million transformation, the 30 individually designed rooms and suites have now emerged with mini-bars hidden inside giant speaker stacks, Wii game consoles and iPod docking stations. Suites include the Purple Haze, Naked Baroque and Naked Luxe —  a rooftop apartment with private garden and alfresco hot tub.

Booze at the bar will flow 24 hours a day and the 24-hour room service menu includes orders of sexy Myla underwear, Jimmy Jane intimacy kits and on-demand private security teams — although the hotel does boast a paparazzi-busting security system. And, for the aging rocker who wants to stay in Mick Jagger shape: a Nike shoe menu.

A rock-and-roll hotel it might be but forget tossing televisions out of windows or riding Harleys down the hotel’s aubergine-hued corridors, adorned with work by London artist, Xavier Pick. According to reports, owners Mark Fuller (former music manager-turned-nightclub owner) and Andy Taylor (Iron Maiden’s co-manager), insist the Sanctum is strictly for today’s well-behaved rock-and-roll elite.
