New Acropolis Museum opens amid international controversy
On Saturday, the new Acropolis Museum opens about 650 feet from Athen’s ancient Acropolis. The glass-and-steel museum includes 4,000 artifacts from the Greek landmark, including many that have returned home from museums around the world.
They do not include, however, the famous Elgin Marbles, which remain in British custody (controversially, we might add). Those missing pieces of the 525-foot frieze that once decorated the walls of the Parthenon have been replaced with exact plaster replicas — their stark whiteness a glaring contrast to the original pieces still in Athens’ possession (and a very public message to the British government?).
In addition to gawking at the Parthenon through a dramatic picture window on the museum’s top floor, visitors can tap into their inner Indiana Jones: An ancient settlement dating back to 3,000 B.C. was uncovered during the museum’s construction and incorporated as an exhibition.
A special admission of one Euro is available through December.
