Parisian hotel opens by Pritzker Prize-winning architect
With three hotels in Paris, Marriott’s Renaissance brand is no stranger to the French capital. However, its fourth and latest property, the Renaissance Paris Arc de Triomphe, opens today with a distinctive boutique style — not to mention the stamp of a Pritzker Prize-winning architect: Christian de Portzamparc. (You probably know his LVMH tower in New York — a glass, origami-like building housing Louis Vuitton’s North American headquarters.)
With a contemporary facade of undulating glass, the 118-room Renaissance on Avenue de Wagram is within sight of the Arc de Triomphe. The in-house restaurant and lounge, Makassar, is billed as “French bistro meets Indonesia” and has a bar that’s backlit with sketches representing fashion, theater and film. The hotel itself is located on the site of the former Theatre de l’empire, and has direct access to the historic Salle Wagram banquet hall — site of the final scene in Bernardo Bertolucci’s film Last Tango.
