Party Like a Pop Star

Forget everything you ever knew about Hard Rock Hotels. That, at least, is the message of the chain’s new San Diego outpost.

Generally, we’d match Hard Rock Cafes and Hotels with bum-bag sporting tourists and steer you away from any hotel proclaiming to be “so stylish it hurts.” But the latest notch in the chain debuts in San Diego this fall with a passable dose of cool: The 12-story Gaslamp Quarter hotel will house two Gerber bars, one being the ubiquitous rooftop bar; a pimped-out nightclub; an outdoor performance venue called Woodstock; and the first Nobu restaurant in town.

That aforementioned injurious style comes courtesy of Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas who designed the staff’s uniforms (cocktail waitresses in corsets and bolero jackets, front desk staff in lizard brocades and pinstripes). Along with the rest of the band, he will also decorate and contribute memorabilia to one of the 17 uniquely designed “Rock Star Suites.” Those who can surrender to conformity will still get a 42-inch flat-screen HDTV, iPod compatible media hub, and ceiling-mounted rain shower in a standard “Hard Rock Suite.” Incidentally, there are 420 of these rooms — a number that perhaps suggests how you dull the style-induced pain.
