Private Pampering in Palm Desert

How to spa behind closed doors.

You don’t just go to Palm Desert to detox — you go there to spa in secrecy. That’s what appears to be the guiding philosophy of the new Spa Sanctuary at the Desert Springs JW Marriott. The huge oasis-like resort in the heart of Coachella Valley is now ushering in guests through the private entrance of its “spa within a spa” that aims to cater to “VIPs and Hollywood elite.” In all, the newly conceived 38,000 square-foot facility features several spa suites serviced by personal butlers, and showcases a couple’s hydrotherapy tub in a private courtyard. In gushing California-speak, the property reassures guests that the spa “fully embraces the ’spa together’ concept,” encouraging couples and groups to get their pampering on — wait for it — “in utter privacy and comfort.” Many of the scrubs and wraps draw on “the healing ingredients and customs of the surrounding Sonoran Desert.” But if you’re bereft of spa mates? Relax. You can console yourself in the aromatic Turkish hammam or the “digitally programmable Desert Rain Showers” that allow guests “to fully choreograph their shower experience.” In private.
