Private White Wilderness
Get your igloo on at the ultra-chic Whitepod mountain lodge.
Last winter was less than thrilling for skiers in the Alps with long lift lines and little snow. This year, though, you can expect fresh powder and few queues at Whitepod, the secluded Swiss resort that commands its own private ski run and lifts. Opening for its fourth season December 1, the award-winning hideaway is set high up in the Dents du Midi near the tiny village of Les Cerniers, a 20-minute chauffeured drive from Aigle (reachable by train from Geneva airport). Whitepod caters to a maximum of 24 guests, and is comprised of nine igloo-shaped pods perched at 5,000 feet on moveable platforms. Which means only the lightest eco-footprint — yet with über-modern insulation technology, wood-burning stoves, and unlimited vistas of the Alpine wilderness.
Outside, you can build snowmen, carve snow angels, and enjoy an exclusive 2,000-foot run — without having to worry about unruly chalet girls or chain-smoking monsieurs butting into the lift line. In the main tent it’s base camp deluxe, with showers, a sauna, a bistro and spa (think milk & honey wraps). And a newly refurbished mountain refuge, 1,300 feet above the main lodge, now hosts private groups of up to 60 with tailored team activities. However you cut it, you’ll be keeping your trip clean and green — at Whitepod you’ll find no electricity and no motorized sports.
