Why Arizona's desert town is red hot right now.
Urban modernity is about to descend on Scottsdale, Arizona. Tomorrow, the tony southwest city The New York Times called “the Beverly Hills of the desert” will host its first upscale modern hotel when the Mondrian Scottsdale opens its doors — just in time for what is billed as “the greatest show on grass,” the FBR Open. Hotel highlights include alfresco dining on the patio of Asia de Cuba, drinks at the Red Bar (interior pictured), and still more drinks at the Skybar, owned by Cindy Crawford’s husband, Randy Gerber. While the New York-based Morgan’s Hotels Group has refined the art of hospitality with St. Martins Lane in London and The Shore Club in Miami among others, they’ll see some competition when the W Scottsdale Hotel & Residences opens in October. The W will feature a second-floor pool with glass portholes so arrivals at the hotel can ogle passing swimmers.
