A Smashing Good Time in Spain

How to bring down the house. Literally.

Thirty stressed-out Spaniards are about to discover what Keith Moon knew intimately well: the therapeutic benefits of smashing a hotel room to smithereens. First, though, they’ll need their heads examined. From a pool of over 1,000 respondents, Spanish business-hotel group, NH Hotels, have selected just 60 people to come to their Hotel Alcalá, in central Madrid, tomorrow. “We wanted to seek out the most stressed out people in Spain,” NH spokesman Eduardo Bartolome told globorati, “so that they could help us trash our hotel before we refurbish it.” Through a series of ads in the Spanish press, the candidates were asked to send in their resumes — but not just any resume; “their stress resumes,” as Bartolome put it.

From the shortlist of harried travelers, only half will get to swing a sledgehammer — depending on how they fare in three tests. In the morning, they’ll have to prove their strength by hitting a punch-bag labeled with the words, “Imagine the face of your boss here.” Next, they’ll be asked to press a finger into a special device that measures their sweat. Finally they’ll have to pass an interview with a psychologist to confirm that they are sufficiently wound up and yet also ensure they won’t turn their “weapon” — as Bartolome playfully put it — on another stressed-out smasher. Professionals will also be on hand to make sure nothing gets out of hand.

The lucky 30 will be kitted out in protective goggles, overalls, hard hats — and yes, weapons. It’s unlikely the demolition-doers will have any say in how the refurbished Alcalá will look when it reopens in September. But they will at least be invited back for a free thank-you dinner and an overnight stay when the hotel welcomes guests again to its digs near the city’s central park, Retiro.
