Vacation Like a Rock Star

Where to bed in tax-exile heaven.

French crooner Johnny Hallyday may have been too hasty when he recently decamped to Switzerland, home to fellow tax dodgers Michael Schumacher, Phil Collins and Shania Twain. Still, you can see why France’s answer to Elvis chose the “Protestant Rome” over Andorra or the Channel Islands: Switzerland’s cities rate highest in the world for quality of life. Now, there’s another reason to visit the land of chocolate and cuckoo clocks (even though the tickers actually originated in Germany’s Black Forest). Last week, the Jiva Hill Park Hotel, a member of Small Luxury Hotels, opened near Geneva, the country’s number-two city. Guests at this 34-room jewel box opposite Mont Blanc may miss fresh powder a little less this season now that they can jockey for position at Jiva’s dressage center, take a dip in their indoor pool or wager it all on black at the nearby casino — a splendid evening out, even if they’re not wealthy tax exiles.
