As far as luxe lodgings go, Cambridge has long lagged behind archrival, Oxford. Until now. Next month, the historic university town welcomes its first upscale hotel with Hotel du Vin Cambridge. The location — unlike its nearest competition, Hotel Felix — is smack in the thick of the University area, and just a short walk from the River Cam, while its Trumpington Street-building dates back to medieval times. The latest addition to Britain’s popular boutique mini-chain, Hotel du Vin, the property has 41 rooms and suites — several of which come with private garden and terrace views over the town’s skyline, and one that has its own cinema. Expect some of the chain’s signature stylish touches (like oversized bathrooms and stand-alone tubs), as well as an open-kitchen French bistro. But drinkers beware: the bar will still be hiding within the twists and turns of the building’s wacky architecture and vaulted cellars. Still, if you get lost on your way to the bar, you’re at least amid one of the world’s most enchanting city centers.
