The Pierre’s New Flair

Ultra-luxe returns to Fifth Avenue.

When you live on the world’s most expensive street, it’s important to keep up appearances. So it’s only natural that the Pierre, Fifth Avenue’s landmark parkside hotel, just finished a $100-million makeover. Reopening today in soft launch after an 18-month hiatus, Pierre 2.0 puts a fresh sheen on the nearly 80-year-old hotel (owned by Indian hospitality giants Taj since 2005), and overhauls everything from the lobby to the guestrooms while adding a couple of new venues to the mix.

The Pierre’s regal, neo-Georgian lobby is fully revamped and joined by 2 East, a brand new lounge serving drinks and light fare from an eye-catching copper bar. Come September (the hotel’s grand opening), all of the suites should be open for reservations, as well as a hotly-anticipated British import: Le Caprice. Though French in name, the brasserie-style restaurant is a London staple for those wanting to see and be seen. Mimicking the black-and-white décor of the original, the Gotham version comes courtesy of Swedish designer Martin Brudnizki and promises to deliver its own steady stream of A-listers.

Upstairs, each of the Pierre’s 189 rooms is getting its own facelift to capture what the hotel touts as an air of “quiet luxury,” which takes more than the new sound-insulated windows (hopefully thick enough to dampen the excitable Bergdorf Goodman crowds). Rooms are now overflowing with refined accents like tufted leather headboards, hand-woven carpets and original art curated by a former Christie’s executive. Even the bathrooms are replete with Turkish marble, though they’ve included the occasional flat-screen TV to ensure you haven’t left the 21st century.
