Zero Impact in Zanzibar

Care about the planet while you care for yourself.

The planet’s first five-star carbon-free resort is now on the drawing boards in London. Said boards belong to British starchitect, Richard Hywel Evans, whose pioneering concept is scheduled to see the light of day next year in Nungwi, Zanzibar. The carbon-neutral project claims to embrace the heights of luxury with zero impact on the environment: each of the 35 villas’ private infinity pools will be naturally filtered by reeds in an adjoining pool; the shape of the villas’ walls will draw in sea breezes as a form of natural air conditioning; and the entire resort will be constructed from local earth, renewable timber and reclaimed stone. The 100 staff will all use bicycles, and airport transfers will ferry guests back and forth to the hotel by electric car. The developers behind the project, Per Aquum, are the same people behind such uber-luxe resorts as the soon-to-be opened Desert Palm (which will be set on its own private polo estate in Dubai), and Huvafen Fushi Maldives (which last month unveiled the world’s first underwater spa, pictured).
